MultiVersus returns as free-to-play platform fighter in the Warner Bros. universe

The free-to-play fighting game MultiVersus is returning to general availability today from publisher Warner Bros. Games and developer Player First Games.

MultiVersus is a free-to-play platform fighter that features an ever-expanding roster of popular characters based on Warner Bros. Discovery franchises, including new additions The Joker (DC), Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th), and Banana Guard (Adventure Time) available at launch, and Agent Smith (The Matrix) available later in the Season 1.

Published by Warner Bros. Games, MultiVersus debuted in July 2022 as a free-to-play fighting game on Unreal Engine 4. While the game got tens of millions of players during its beta, the developer Player First Games took the unusual move of taking the game down a year later in June 2023. (Local offline play was still available).

Since that time, the developer has been busy, rebuilding the game in Unreal Engine 5 and adding a new player-versus-environment mode and new moves for each character. The team used the feedback from the open beta to rework the game and get it ready for the relaunch. They promised that player progress and currency would transfer to the full launch.

The title is a live-service game that Warner Bros. Games hopes will build a permanent audience with fans who will willingly spend in the free-to-play title. Game companies are putting high hopes into such live service games as player hobbies with no limit on player spending.

The game is debuting on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and the PC (Epic Games Store).

As a reminder, if you’ve played MultiVersus before and log into the Warner Bros. Games Account that you used during the open beta, you will have access to past progress and content earned.

At launch, MultiVersus will offer an all-new PvE “Rifts” mode, which provides a different way to experience the game, outside of competitive PvP matches. Rifts is a way for players to learn mechanics, test characters, and sharpen skills, whether jumping in solo or cooperatively online with a friend.

MultiVersus also supports full cross-play and cross-progression on all launch platforms.
