Activision shuts down classic MW2 multiplayer mod

Activision Publishing has shut down a highly anticipated mod that aimed to recreate the multiplayer experience of 2009’s Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. The H2 Multiplayer (H2M) Mod planned to go live on August 16, 2024, but the team received a cease and desist letter from Activision the day before launch.

The H2M mod was built to use the PC version of Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered. Like other high profile mods, H2M planned to release a gameplay experience that rivaled a full title or DLC. Players would get access to both 2009’s MW2 and MWR’s maps, a fresh take on MW2’s prestige system and more.

Excitement for the H2M mod has already led to sales for Activision. According to Steamcharts, Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered hit its highest peak on Steam since it launched in 2017. Notably, the title was on sale for 50% from August 5-14 and was third on Steam’s top sellers list.

This course of action isn’t too surprising for Activision. The publisher shut down an equally ambitious mod, SM2, in May 2023.
